Others

A number of projects result in products that are generally available without the complexities linked to products that have received government funding. The following represent some of these:

1. Prebiotics

Exopolysaccarides from two Bacillus spp. strains. These have the ability to promote the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium adolescentis. The prebiotic effects of these polysaccharides are demonstrably better than those of inulin.

2. Probiotics

Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus plantarum, isolated from fermented vegetable matter: These exhibit good probiotic properties such as anti-oxidant activity, cholesterol-lowering potentials and adhesion ability.

3. A new generation E. coli arabinose induction system for protein expression

Arabinose is safe to use and is environmentally friendly as no dioxin is produced. It is less expensive and safer than IPTG. The expression efficiency of this expression system is 5.8 times higher than the T7 expression system.
